Now that I have my own place for the first time I am looking into all types of purchased that I have never made before. I need apartment insurance, rental payments and electricity. There are a lot of electricity companies that I can choose from but I want the cheapest electricity company and one with a low or even no deposit. How do I find the best electricity companies for my new apartment?
The first step should be to avoid the knee jerk reaction and select the same electricity companies that your parents used. It is not uncommon that your parents are paying nineteen cents a kWh (kilo watt hour) and they could reduce their bill to nine cents a kWh but they haven’t switched because they are loyal to their old reliable electricity company. Funny thing is that those electricity companies have no loyalty to them so don’t fall into this trap.

The other major pitfall to avoid is to remember that cheap electricity companies are not always the best deals. As we like to say “the devil can be in the details.” A smart consumer will look at all the facts regarding additional or potential charges that are added on to the price per kilowatt hour charged by the retail electricity provider. Each of the electricity companies a consumer is researching are required to provide a facts statement that shows all the actual and potential charges they may receive. Some of these charges are state taxes, delivery fees or potential energy efficiency charges. So the buyer needs to beware that they need to look into all the expenses they may be charged.
Another potential problem area could be a termination fee. You should do your best to commence your electricity service when your lease begins and when it ends. Some electricity companies charge up to two hundred dollar, or more for a termination fee. This fee is charged if the customer terminates their electricity prior to the actual end of the contract. Many unaware customers get a surprise one hundred fifty to a two hundred dollar bill from their former electricity company in their new apartment’s mail box. Avoid this bill by being sure that your electricity companies contract term coincides with the termination of your lease contract.

If you have waited to late to connect your electricity, don’t feel bad many people do, you can place an expedite order to usually get your electricity connected within twenty four hours. Your cheap electricity companies office will be able to place an order on your behalf by contacting the delivery company. The delivery company is the entity that maintains the electricity meters, power lines and transformers. They are also the people the repair the delivery system if there is a power outage. There will be a charge placed on your first months bill for the expedite. This fee is set by the delivery company and your electricity company doesn’t control this expense.
