Driving through my neighborhood I am seeing solar panel installations. I have looked into some of these solar panels for my own home. Because of my companies free electricity program the economics don’t work for me. Texas solar electricity is becoming a more common event.
While researching the solar options I learned that a significant amount of the expense is for storage of the electricity. There are also environmental consequences when a home has storage systems for solar power.
Researches have discovered that storing solar energy actually increases the homes electricity use. The reason is that the storage of electricity actually consumes power during the storage and discharge process. According to researchers this can consume 300 – 600 kWh over a year. This could result in an average of 8 to 14 percent increase in electricity consumption for the average household.
The production of storage equipment also has an impact on the environment. Sure the manufacturing of this equipment nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide and suffer are emitted into the atmosphere. SO if the consumer of Texas solar electricity prefers to make their home green they should consider the environmental impact of solar storage systems. However, even with solar storage systems the use of solar power is greener that not having a solar system at all.
Texas Solar Electricity Expands
As companies like Solar City and others continue to perfect the solar panels and storage systems I expect that we will see improvements in the efficiencies of the systems. However, based on todays technology I am not sure that I would store the electricity in my home.
When the electricity isn’t being used the homeowner can transfer the unused power back into the grid and get a credit to offset the usage of traditional electricity. Overall the homeowner has the ability to choose either option that is most beneficial.
